These properties fall into a few classes, and it can be useful to understand the differences. While many liquid fuel properties are stable and consistent, there are a few critical properties that are heterogeneous, transient, or unstable. Understanding these variations is crucial for accurate field sampling, interpreting test results, and refining the precision of your testing methods.

Andy Pickard has over 50 years experience in petroleum products and liquid fuels in Canada and the USA.  He has worked with all fuels: natural gas / propane / gasoline / aviation fuels / diesel fuel / heavy bunker and alternative fuels such as FAME and ethanol fuel blends (and other products including lubricants, additives, waxes, and asphalts).

Background:

1964: B.Sc., Honours Chemistry, University of British Columbia, Vancouver, B.C., Canada.

1967: Ph.D., Chemistry, University of Western Ontario, London, Ontario, Canada.

1967 – 1969: 2 years post-doctoral work at the University of Chicago, Illinois, USA.

1969 to 1979: Imperial Oil Limited, Sarnia, Ontario, Canada

1979 to 2003: Petro-Canada, Calgary, Alberta, Canada: analytical services, technical services, Senior Advisor, fuels, Western Canada.

2003 to present: consulting in fuels; taught ASTM diesel fuel course for 17 years; chaired ASTM Subcommittee D02.H0 on LPG for 10+ years; chaired CGSB Gasoline Committee for 10 years.
