The Sheraton Rhodes Resort in Rhodes, Greece was the venue for the 13th International Symposium organized by the International Association for the Stability, Handling and Use of Liquid Fuels. The symposium began with an opening reception/dinner held at the Alexis4Seasons Restaurant inside the Old Town of Rhodes on Sunday, 6 October, and ended with a closing reception at the Sheraton on Thursday, 10th October. The Gala Dinner was held on Wednesday evening at Kallithea Springs, A World Heritage Site.

There were 140 delegates and 39 spouses/guests in attendance from 24 countries. Delegates viewed 19 poster presentations and 16 company exhibits at the symposium.

The Keynote address was presented by Anthony Kitson-Smith, IASH Chairman and CEO of The Clouds Network Limited on “Sampling and Fuel Quality Management, The Real World.” It was an excellent presentation relating to the theme of the 13th International Symposium.

The John D. Bacha Research Award of Excellence Award was presented to Sonia Repetto from The University of the West of England for her paper entitled: “Towards Effective Fuel Dehydrating Icing Inhibitors.” The award was renamed this year to encourage a larger number of young scientists and engineers to join and enrich this industry. It now includes researchers who are within five years of their graduation. Two other young researchers who submitted abstracts for the award were given the opportunity to present their work at the symposium.

The Nahum Por Award was presented to Robert E. Morris, Naval Research Laboratory, for his leadership and promotion of the Association over the past several years. IASH Lifetime Achievement Awards were given to the following individuals for their dedicated efforts in the field of aviation fuels throughout their careers:

  • Frederick J. Cornforth, Retiree from Phillips 66
  • Dennis H. Hoskin, ExxonMobil Research & Engineering
  • George R. Wilson, III, Southwest Research Institute
  • Steven Zabarnick, University of Dayton Research Institute
Fifty-Seven presentations were given in eleven sessions that included the following topics:
